When choosing towing equipment, we should first pay attention to its type. Tow ropes, however, are products that do not have a high degree of diversification, which makes it easier to make the final decision. Individual types of equipment differ in terms of durability and scope of use. Here are the types of tow lines:
Braided tow rope
It is made of appropriately twisted polypropylene fibres. It is characterized by wide availability. We can buy it in practically every supermarket and at most gas stations. Due to its low price, it is very popular among drivers.
However, it has its drawbacks, which are revealed especially in the case of the cheapest models of unclear origin, which are produced by unproven companies. Then, problems may arise with the resistance of the towing cable to all kinds of overloads associated with towing, including jerking or stretching.
As a consequence, the product may even break off, thus creating a road hazard. The problem with the cheapest braided tow lines is also the fact that they wear out very quickly, even if we do not use them often.
The above-mentioned disadvantages, however, do not completely rule out the braided line as a product intended for towing, provided that we choose a more expensive model, which will be characterized by tightly twisted fibres and the appropriate thickness. Then the product will provide us with an optimal level of security.
Flexible towing rope
Due to the possibility of stretching in case of increased load, it is often referred to as dynamic. In fact, it only increases in size from a dozen to several dozen centimetres. However, this slight stretch increases the strength and resistance of the line to a variety of towing loads. As a result, it is characterized by a longer service life. What’s more, thanks to the use of an elastic towing cable, towing is safer and driving is more comfortable. This applies especially to the take-off, which is smoother than in the case of using a braided rope and braking – the rope is less tangled. The product also absorbs minor jerks.
Steel tow rope
Its characteristic feature is stiffness, which allows the product to be used when towing under high load conditions. It is usually used for the emergency transport of trucks. It will be able to easily pull a passenger vehicle out of mud or a ditch. Therefore, it will prove itself in difficult conditions. It is used not only by truck drivers but also by farmers. However, its disadvantage is that it would take up a lot of space in the trunk of a passenger car.
Kinetic tow rope
One of the most expensive lines available on the market. For its production, polyamide is used, which is characterized by high elongation and tear resistance, even under heavy loads. For these reasons, it is a rope used during the dynamic extraction of off-road cars and trucks from mud, ditches or snowdrifts, which requires a lot of force. It is therefore perfect for all off-road operations.
Towing strap
Polyester straps are used for its production, thanks to which this product is characterized by high durability, which reduces the risk of tearing it during towing. Thanks to its solid workmanship and resistance to mechanical damage, it can be successfully used for safe towing of passenger cars. In addition to low stretchability, which increases the strength of the belt, its compact size is also its characteristic feature. Thanks to this, we can easily store it in the trunk.
